Long hot summer of uncertainty

One of the things we regularly hear from our members is their desire for certainty, so they can plan properly when running their business. But that is something that seems to be in short supply at the moment.

For example, the cost of energy is vitally important, particularly for those in the hospitality sector, but the situation in the Middle East seems to be as unstable as ever and so oil and gas prices are likely to fluctuate, making budgeting all but impossible.

Whilst the Labour Government remains in place, the arrival of a new Prime Minister and a fresh Cabinet makes it feel almost as though we’ve had a General Election. Some policies will stay the same but others will change. There have already been a number of announcements which will affect our members, but it will be some time before we get complete clarity about what the consequences will be.

Closer to home there’s uncertainty about the Airport’s plans for expansion, which could impact Felton Common. It’s a complex and controversial topic because the Airport brings real benefit through employment and ease of foreign travel, but at a cost to our amenities and bringing additional traffic to unsuitable rural roads. It’s not easy to say where the balance lies.

Thankfully there has been at least one item of good news, which is the certainty that a Post Office will re-open in Chew Magna, thanks to a successful crowd funding appeal, supported by many local businesses and residents, which will pay for the infrastructure necessary to allow Debbie at the Pet Hub to run a first class service which will be of great value to the whole community.
