You can mix business with pleasure

We started 2025 with a social event, having a relaxed drink, a game of skittles and a curry at the Stoke Inn. But even though it wasn’t a formal meeting as such, it was still a great chance for conversation and the swapping of much information, which helped members get a good understanding about the current state of the local economy.

It’s as much an art as a science as we don’t have the benefit of detailed statistical information, so instead we rely on the valuable nuggets that come up as we chat.

For example, demand for work space is always a reliable indicator of how things are looking and we heard that whilst there are still plenty of people needing accommodation, some of them are interested in smaller spaces and shorter length leases. That sounds as if there is still enthusiasm and ambition to start and grow businesses, though perhaps tempered by some caution about not over extending themselves or taking on a long term commitment in the light of broader uncertainties about how the national picture develops.

Another topic that came up was about the important hospitality sector. We know from previous discussions that restaurants and pubs have been finding it difficult to attract and retain staff, hence some establishments have taken to not opening every day of the week. They have also had to deal with increasing costs, such as heating and now are facing the additional demands from the changes in National Insurance.

It's no surprise then, that there seems to be a general cut back in advertising of spring events such as Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day as business owners take a close look at every line in their expenditure.

Professional services seem to be doing well with a concentration on returning business from existing clients, which is why it is so important to maintain a high level of performance to retain customers.

It was good to welcome a new member to our group who was able to start to get to know people, make introductions and form contacts. Who knows where they may lead in the future ?

In many ways it was a classic Chamber of Commerce get together. Established members having some fun and sharing information, welcoming a newcomer and thinking about the future – who says you can’t mix business with pleasure !
